In the beautiful red brick building between the Köllnischer Park and the Spreeufer resides the Märkisches Museum Berlin, which deals with Berlin’s city history. The museum lab invites young visitors to participate and to explore the city’s history.

The new [Test] Spaces of the Märkisches Museum will open up a sensual approach. The exhibition on the second floor is designed as a tour, in which visitors can experience the content themselves, searchingly and playfully.

How museums work is explained in eight theme rooms on 250 squre meters: collecting, researching, presenting, restoring, curating and staging.

These tasks are told along the main themes, “History of Berlin in the Middle Ages” and “Childhood and Everyday Life around 1900”. Nearly 500 exhibits from the collection of the Stadtmuseum Berlin are presented with great attention to detail.

The starting point of the tour is a room with a model of the medieval twin cities of Berlin and Cölln. Afterwards, visitors have two possibilities to explore the [Test] Spaces: either deepening the subject of the “Middle Ages” or directly to the “everyday life and life around 1900”.

On hard original school benches of the turn of the century children can get a sense of the school system around 1900. They can also learn about the various stations of the development of writing utensils and try out writing implements from different eras.

The centerpiece of the [Test] Spaces is an action space that animates to participate. Here, the young visitors can try out the museum’s work in a very practical way and create their exhibition in miniature form, which will be then directly presented in the exhibition.

The [Test] Spaces are geared to all museum visitors – from families, groups and school classes to individuals.
